Should We Send Save The Date Cards?

Whoop, so you have your outdoor wedding date booked! The next question is – do you even need to send Save The Date cards?

The long and short of this is, NO you do not have to. So, if you do not need to, why do people send them?

Save the Dates are one of the first official wedding announcements that you make to your guests. It is always a good idea to give the important people on your guest list a heads up, especially if you have guests travelling. This will give them plenty of time to book time off work, book flights, organise accommodation and childcare etc.

Sending a Save The Date card definitely gives you a better chance of your guests being able to come to your wedding.

Who Should Get One?

This is the big question that you should consider carefully. In a nutshell, we recommend sending your Save the Date invites to the guests that you feel must be at your special day.

Sending a Save the Date card can lead to guests assuming they are invited to the whole day. Therefore if you have family, friends and colleagues on the list that are invited just for the evening party, it might be safer to not send one. This removes the hassle of having to explain.

What information should be included?

This is the first taste of your wedding day. You may not have decided on styling ideas, so keep it simple. What your guests really need to know at this stage is when and where are you getting married. The idea of the Save The Date card is that your guests are included in the build-up excitement for your day and also that they get their calendars marked.

TOP TIP Physically write the names of each guest on your save the date, rather than a just family name. This way, there is no assumption that children are invited if they’re not.

How should it look?

Our advice would be to keep it simple. However, there are no official rules as to how it should look. You can be as imaginative as you like. It does not have to match the actual invitation. As I’m sure at this early stage, you have no idea what your actual invitation will look like.
