Lorna & Oliver’s One Giant Hat Tipi Wedding

Lorna and Oliver celebrated their One Giant Hat Tipi Wedding back in May 2021.  With covid restrictions lifting before their day, it meant they got to celebrate with their dearest and dearest in a beautiful intimate wedding celebration.

With a quick change of plans due to bad May weather in the morning, they hosted their ceremony inside the tipis.  Using all their decorations to make the tipis look even more beautiful!

Following the downpour in the morning, the weather held off for the rest of the day, meaning they got to make the most of the outside space and have some beautiful photos together.

Lorna talks us through the details here.

What made you decide on an outdoor wedding?

We both love to be outdoors, whether that’s out with the dogs, friends, on the farm or just hiking in random places, so we knew we wanted to have an outdoor wedding! Even if we did end up getting married inside the tipi thanks to the Great British weather. Our day was still perfect!

What did everybody wear?

I had no idea what kind of dress I wanted so I tried on each and every style. When I found the dress, it was just me and my Mum but I knew the dress was the one that felt right. Albeit a few personal touches and alterations later. Oliver knew exactly what he wanted, which was a suit that was a little different. He found an amazing Marc Darcy suit, which suited our outdoor wedding perfectly. He even wore his jacket to our first date night after the wedding!

Jessica Mair hair and makeup, worked her magic and made me feel special. Even helping fasten my dress and love the doggo’s who decided to break in whilst we were getting ready.

Tell us about your ceremony

We held our wedding at my parent’s farm. Originally we had pictured the ceremony to be outside by the water, then the wettest May on record happened. Oliver and his best man spent the entire wedding morning moving all of our ceremony dressings inside and setting up the tipi ready for the ceremony. It may have been a mad dash for them but all our handmade touches from the arch to the flowers made the tipi look even more beautiful.

We had Jo from My Perfect Ceremony, as our celebrant after meeting at a Sami Tipi event. From that moment, Oliver knew she was the person he wanted to perform the ceremony and he was absolutely right. Jo was so passionate and created an amazing experience that was praised by all of our guests, her enthusiasm made me even more excited than I already was to get married.

How did you feed your guests?

As we only had a small number of guests, we were conscious of what we were serving! We provided welcome drinks and refreshments before, during and after the wedding breakfast.

Our caterers, Ridgways Caterers, provided lots of options so we could give our guests a full three course ‘menu’ to choose from in a Tipi! They were brilliant and provided our ‘build a burger’ option for the evening food. Everyone I have spoken to says that they have never had better food at a wedding or as much!

How would you describe your theme/styling?

We really achieved the style we were going for. I love lily’s and chose a floral nature look whilst Oliver wanted to bring in the handmade rustic style. Apparently not ‘redneck chic’ as it lovingly got called! Oliver insisted on hand making our wedding arch, completely by himself.  It was perfect.

How did you entertain your guests?

With the ceremony happening during Covid we had to adhere to some restrictions, but luckily the ceremony took place towards the easing of restrictions.

We had Pat Mulligan as our wedding host for the entire day and I am so glad we did. He kept reading the room and providing different bits of entertainment. From shared wedding stories to serious organisations and plan B’s, had an amazing influence over those bits that you don’t think about, that a traditional venue might naturally take care of.

It made us smile as it was Pat’s first wedding since Covid and after months of planning and a fully re-kitted van, Pat made the night as relaxed and as special as we hoped, but it soon flew by!

What are your Top Tips for planning a Tipi Wedding?

Listen to what Jodie, Craig and the team advise, they know what they are talking about!

I would really also advise hiring a wedding host too. Or just Pat, as he easily reduced our stress by half! He dealt with so many things we hadn’t thought of. Between assisting with the timing of the day, helping direct the caterers and guests, to even helping fasten my dad’s boutonniere to his suit. By the end of the night, he felt like a part of the family!
