Alex & Andrew’s Large Tipi Wedding Celebration

Alex and Andrew’s large tipi wedding celebration happened in October last year.  With lots of space on their family farm, they decided to celebrate at home in six giant hat tipis.

They really celebrated in style, with a beautiful church ceremony followed by a helicopter ride over to the tipis.  They had a live brass band to play for them when they arrived at the tipis and whilst they enjoyed canapés and welcome drinks.

With a large tipi space to decorate, they did everything beautifully.  With lots of pretty florals and hanging decorations, it was classic and stylish.

Alex talks us through the details of their day alongside photos taken by Joe Kingston.

What made you decide on an outdoor wedding?

We were incredibly lucky to have the perfect venue for the wedding at my family farm and we wanted a rustic feel for our wedding that felt homely with lots of character: Sami Tipi ticked all the boxes. Katie Baker of Katie Lou Weddings co-ordinated on the day for us which was great so that we could relax and know that the day was in good hands.

What did everybody wear?

I wore a satin fit and flare wedding gown with a long train with buttons all down the back- nothing like what I thought I would choose! A particularly special item was my sisters veil which I had pearls sewn on from my Mums wedding dress. The bridesmaids wore teal dresses from Monsoon and gold sequin shoes; the matron of honour wore a navy Bombshell dress.

The groom and groomsmen wore a navy tail suit with a tweed waistcoat and tan shoes. My dad wore traditional Scottish dress of a kilt in black watch tartan. Bouquets; buttonholes; and corsages were arranged by Susan Evetts our local florist and they were absolutely beautiful.

Tell us about your ceremony.

We were married by Cannon Barbara Clutton, a farming vicar and family friend, at our village church. The church was decorated with wheat sheaves from wheat that Andrew had grown on his family farm; we had 2 milk churns at the entrance to the church and a flower arch at the lych gate. It was a family affair decorating the church and the tipis.

How did you feed your guests?

Mark Higgs, The Castle at Edgehill Catering, did a super job of catering for our wedding.

We love canapés so we started with a selection of these as a starter with reception drinks and had traditional sirloin of roast beef followed by blackberry and apple trifle. We had tea & coffee ‘station’ available all day as well as the bar and cheese and biscuits.  For our evening guests, we served pizza and beef rolls. Wholesome and hearty was the theme.

How would you describe your theme / styling?

One of our guests described our wedding as James Bond meets the Darling Buds of May! I’m not sure that was what we were aiming for but its not a bad combination. We really wanted to look after our guests and make them feel comfortable.

How did you entertain your guests?

The Bilton Silver Band played during the reception drinks and canapés. They were amazing playing the Floral Dance; the Post Horn Gallop; the theme to Jurassic park and much more. After the wedding breakfast Angus Baskerville, magician, circulated around the tables and wowed our guests. We danced to Miracle Cure who did a fabulous combination of pop and Irish jig.

What are your Top Tips for planning a Tipi Wedding?

1. Appoint Sami Tipi! Jodie and Craig were simply brilliant to work with. They are incredibly creative; organised; and fastidious in their approach- a real pleasure to work with.

2. Planning and a great team of family and friends to help decorate the space. We used lots of plants and tress to decorate the space which looked lovely and is more sustainable than cut flowers.

3. Invest in photography and video because it is such a treat to look back on because the day goes SO quickly.
