Garden Teepee Wedding

Each and every wedding we work on at Sami Tipi is very different. Every couple has their own individual tastes and requirements and we just love seeing their plans and ideas come to life. This was no exception for the wedding of Abi and Graeme.

From our first meeting with Abi and Graeme, we could tell that personal and meaningful were key objectives to their wedding planning process. It’s great to see from the pictures and their wedding story that they kept true to their goals.

With this wedding we also love how involved the whole family were in planning the day, each adding in little touches to bring it all together. There were also lots of skilled friends involved and local, independent suppliers, which is something we always love. We were absolutely delighted to play a part in that and are honoured that Abi and Graeme chose us to be their tipi supplier.

Take it Away Abi…

We chose an outdoor wedding because of our love for the outdoors and gardens of my parent’s property. We were hoping to enjoy a lovely day in the sun. Unfortunate for us the weather wasn’t on our side that day!

However, it was just what we wanted and more!! We really wanted a place that meant something special to both of us. General, traditional wedding venues are all very similar and lack that personal touch we were looking for. Being creative I thought an outdoor wedding would suit us and suit our style as well as reflect ourselves as individuals and as a couple.

The Outfits

My dress was from a local bridal shop and the owner of the store is an old family friend, Trish. Â I bought it just two days before finding out I was pregnant (!!) so the stress was well and truly on! The wedding was booked and even though I knew Sami Tipi would be totally understanding and would possibly agree on a delay, I felt it was best to stick with the original date. All the way through I was having fittings but obviously couldn’t have the right alterations until after baby arrived the following April. Planning a wedding is just perfect for losing that baby weight! The boys had rented suits from a local hire store in Shrewsbury called Peter Posh. They had a three-piece suit which was navy blue with a tweed waistcoat. The tie and pocket squares we went for were the same colour as the mother of the bride’s outfit. My mother’s dress was also made by Trish. She designed and made her dress and jacket to match in deep purple. The bridesmaids had a pale purple/lilac colour chiffon floor-length dress, again Trish altered the dresses perfectly to suit my girls, however, the dresses themselves were from a bridal store in Shrewsbury.

The Venue

We got married at my Grandads chapel just 2 miles away from my parent’s house, our venue. It has been in the family for over 100 years and it was just right to get married there. Sadly my grandad passed away the year we got engaged in 2015 and when I had asked him if we could get married there and he was over the moon that I had chosen to wed there. My aunty has then taken it over and she also was in charge of all the decorations and helped me tremendously with the Vicar and the organist. She also arranged all the flowers beautifully that we had ordered from our local florist, Lily the Pink. I had two registrars come to the Chapel for the day to officiate the wedding.

The Wedding Breakfast

For food, we had afternoon tea after our ceremony for our 40 guests, which was provided by a local cater and friend of the family, Kaye.

She was AMAZING!! She welcomed all the guests and ourselves with Pimms on arrival, and the food was great. I can’t thank her enough as she made it so pretty for us! Kaye and her team came and set up in the morning and had china set up on the tables. They prepared all the food from the catering tent supplied by Sami tipi. We had a selection of sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls, vol-au-vents and then a selection of different flavoured cakes and scones to our choice. To finish off, we had cheese boards followed by teas and coffees. We also had two bottles of wine per table and the day time caterer poured us our champagne for speeches. I wanted afternoon tea as I only had very close friends and family to the ceremony. Surrounded by people who know Graeme and I better than anyone, it was important to me that it was an occasion that brought everyone together with yummy food and lots of laughter.

We also had Helen and her team from honey bees which was so delightful, they set up in-between and welcomed the evening guests with ice cream. This again suited our theme and I chose to have a choice of either a cone or to have ice cream in teacups.

The Evening Catering

In the evening we had a different caterer to do a BBQ. Graeme and I love a good BBQ! We had a further 80 to 100 guests to feed so we thought what better than a good old BBQ to finish off our summer party. We had a selection of delicious meats cooked and a variety of cold salads and pasta. It was perfect for people to go and help themselves when they wanted to. I enjoyed the informality of a BBQ as it brought all our guests together. Seeing our family and close friends all brought together in this way really added a special moment to our day.

Graeme made our own bar out recycled pallets. We had a selection of spirits on the bar with two large casks of beer for our day time guests to help themselves to drink. We were able to purchase the beer from our local brewery, Stonehouse.

The Styling

Regarding themes, we decided to keep it close to heart. Myself being a farmers daughter and country bumpkin we chose to have a country vintage theme. It suited the setting perfectly. The colours we had were pastel shades and floral. The lilac featuring in the bridesmaid’s dresses was our main colour which I then mirrored in the flowers and decorations. I did my makeup myself which I know was a draughting task. I had enquired with two makeup artists that I do know but unfortunately, they were both busy that weekend. I had asked my photographer for advice with what makeup photographs well. Doing my own makeup meant that I could do it exactly how I wanted it and create the natural look that I was after. I had a friend that I used to work with do my hair and it was so so beautiful. I had been handed down a hairpiece which belonged to my Nana, my father’s mother, and she wore it for her wedding day to my Grandad in 1958, it acted as my something old as well as having lots of sentimental value.

Advice from Abi

Definitely book your tipi in advance and choose the perfect location for you. We had thought about a tipi wedding for some time. A year before booking we went to our friend’s wedding who also used Sami tipi and we just fell in love! It was just what we wanted. You must be prepared for all weather! The weather had been so glorious the week before (even the day before and after were beautiful) but sadly on our day, it rained all day. We also had really the wind (weather-wise!) It was so windy our bar tent blew down. Luckily with all the strong men we had, it was back up in no time! The tipis look beautiful whatever the setting and the number of compliments we had were so heartwarming. It really is perfect for that social side as people enjoy their day. Plan your decorations, the tipis simply are beautiful, but with the help of decorations it really shows off your personality and creativeness. Plan ahead on where you want to place things. We had to bring a few things indoors due to the weather as we were planning on having the photo booth outside. Bringing it into the tent wasn’t an issue but do take space into consideration. I highly recommend the catering tent and all the extras that Sami tipi provide. The fire pit was such a big hit too. Remember it does go quite chilly at night and guests can get a bit cold. It was so fun to gather around and even toast some marshmallows on for the children, although the adults found it more fun!

The Suppliers

Our cake was so beautiful. When looking for cake inspiration I saw a picture of a tea party cake and fell in love instantly. I asked our cake maker if she could do it and she just excelled herself. We had the floral print in the lilac colour and she made three different flavoured cakes each as delicious as the last. I wanted something quirky but still the traditional tiered cake.

I tried to support all our local businesses as I love to see them succeed and grow. We had our flowers from our local florist. She made all the buttonholes for the bridal party and had simple, yet effective gypsophila bouquets for the girls. For myself, she created a vintage mixed bouquet with lilac roses. We were able to buy decorative flowers off her too and my Aunty arranged the flowers for the chapel. Being a dab hander at flower arrangements for the usual chapel services I knew she would make the chapel look beautiful.

Family Support

I gave my sister the job of finding me the perfect singer for the day. We did not want a wedding DJ playing a typical wedding playlist so she got a girl called Cara Hammond. We gave her a few of our favourite songs to sing as well as having her perform her own choice of songs. It was so nice to have her singing and watch my guests enjoy the atmosphere she set. Afterwards, we had made our own playlists of music after we had our first dance.

Most decorations we made ourselves. My girls and I decorated the tipi the day before the wedding and we did the centrepieces ourselves, which were an arrangement of mixed flowers in vintage tea and coffee pots on the tables. I created and designed the table plan out of a recycled pallet with gypsophila flowers in glass bottles. I wrote our itinerary on a board that I had painted with blackboard paint. It was simple but effective and still kept it to suit our theme. Also, we had a photo booth which my mum and dad had made. I had an idea of how to do it after seeing several photo booth ideas and I wanted one that would suit our theme. We set up a table and chairs in front of the photo booth to look like an afternoon tea party set up. All the other decorations that we hadn’t made I was able to hire from a company I found on Facebook called vintage lane. They supplied our LOVE letter lights and our sweet cart for our guests.
