Spotlight on Darby & Joan
There are only 7 weeks until our open weekend which is taking place on the 19th and 20th April at Bawdon Lodge Farm. We have enrolled the help of some very talented suppliers, who will be helping us showcase our magnificent tipis. The open weekend will give you the opportunity to see two giant hats and chill-out tipi and meet fabulous suppliers.
On todays blog I want to shine the spotlight on the award winning Karen from Darby & Joan, who will be styling our tipis for the open weekend and she can’t wait to get her hands on them.
Firstly tell us a little bit about yourself?
I started Darby & Joan in 2010. I’d long had a love of antique bits and pieces (old tat as some would say!) and was making candles poured into old teacups, jelly moulds, trifle dishes, anything that would hold wax. I had made a friend a three tier china cake stand out of old plates for her 20th wedding anniversary, (which is china), and she loved it. Those two ideas were so well received that I started to sell them at small craft markets and fairs. Over the first year it was more of a hobby than a business. At these events so many people asked if I hired any china for events that I knew there was a gap in the market. I never had a plan, just an idea – and the business has grown to what it is today.
How would you describe your style?
I’ve always had an interest in fashion, interiors and design and I’d love to think that my business has an integrity and style that reflects that. If I had to choose three words to describe my style I would say personal, interesting and honest.
What services do you offer?
We now have a large selection of antique and vintage props and china that we hire for weddings and other events (our biggest and most popular prop is Dolly, our 1966 split screen camper van), we offer afternoon tea catering, have a team of gorgeous waitresses, help couples to plan and style their day, organise and style photo shoots and retail windows – the list goes on.
A typical Darby & Joan wedding, based on 50 guests can start from as little as £1,400. This includes all china hire, a classic afternoon tea, styling a venue and a staff of three for nine hours.
We have created a unique wedding and event design service and specialise in hosting relaxed weddings – days made with real love, personality and care and taking inspiration from our love of vintage props and ideas. We know the importance of a couple finding a company who can help to create a wedding with a style and personality that reflects them both and comes in on budget.
What do you love most about weddings?
It is a real privilege being asked to be so involved in a wedding and I always, always have an excitement about every wedding we work on.
Finally… Whats the best moment you’ve had as a stylist?
From a professional point of view, winning the National Wedding Industry Award for Best National Venue Stylist was pretty awesome! Personally, working on a wedding over a few months, getting to know the couple, helping them with pulling together ideas and being there on the day seeing it all come together and look beautiful. We have worked on festival themes, rustic days at farms, elegant affairs National Trust properties, afternoon tea weddings in marquees – the list goes on. We are working on our first tipi wedding at the end of this summer (with you guys!) and can’t wait to get my hands on it!
